Sarah Baartman Creative Scientists

This is a science, art and math awareness project for high school students in Pearston

Where students are encouraged to conduct science experiments which they later report on through creative writing. The project operates from the premise that the students involved are aware of math, art and science as academic subjects but are not entirely aware how these subjects influence and impact their daily lives and future prospects, therefore, we position STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths) as sociable subjects that students can engage with daily.

Xolisa Ngubelanga from JoKinda conceptualised and introduced this programme. Some of the inspiration came from accompanying Pearston Secondary School learners to the annual Science Festival in Grahamstown. Other inspiration came from starting the wonderful Creative Arts Nation when he first started working in Pearston in 2016. Arts Creative Nation learned about poetry and drama, and even performed at the Grahamstown Arts Festival in 2019, making Pearston super proud! Below are videos of them in action. Some of the wonderful facilitators part of SBCS has been Mzimkhulu Tom, Nontuthuzelo Ngxakaza, Nomakrestu Xakathugaga and Mbuso Ngcongo from Umbalabala.
